A Welcome Message
From Dr. Thomas
Welcome to The Sankofa Practice. I created this medical home because primary care should always be a personal partnership, never a transaction. As a family provider, professor, and researcher, I have spent my career looking at the foundational roots of health—because to build a thriving future, we must first honor and understand where we come from. My clinical philosophy is guided by the West African tradition of Sankofa—the wisdom of looking backward to reclaim what is vital to move forward. Over thirty years in nursing, from delivering newborns and managing clinical research to serving as a medical director, I have learned that true wellness requires looking at the whole person. We must take into account your family’s medical lineage, your cultural background, and your daily lifestyle. Whether I am teaching the next generation of nurse practitioners at the University of Washington, advocating for health equity as the Director of the Center for Anti-Racism & Equity in Nursing, or working with you in our clinic on chronic care and weight management, my mission remains unchanged: to provide care that respects your journey and empowers your voice. I have the profound privilege of caring for entire households, from infancy through the end of life. Thank you for welcoming me into your health journey. I look forward to building a healthier future together.
